Hello everybody! It’s Ged and Kels, two Aussies, sharing our experiences from South America. After a not so memorable arrival to La Paz (don’t mention the AFL to Ged - you can catch up here • Crossing the Peru to Bolivia border with P... ), we finally had time to acquaint ourselves with our new city. La Paz and the nearby El Alto (pretty much La Paz) were massive, so a guided walking tour was a must. With a bit of a false start (Kelsie got pooped on) we explored the lower heart of the city including the Witches Market (only a little creepy) before catching a gondola up to El Alto. Once there, we were a little suspicious of the local street markets (dark web IRL) but our guide got us through easy enough and took us to see some special traditional wrestling. Cholitas Wrestling was crazy fun! Traditionally dressed women doing flips, body slams and swinging each other from plaits - it was mad. The entertainment with a few beers and plenty of laughs was a great way to round out a full day in La Paz. We headed to bed early however, because tomorrow - risk it all on Death Road! Ok, so ‘risking it all’ could be a bit dramatic but this road has claimed countless lives from car and bus accidents. Luckily for us, most of the road is now closed to traffic and we went down the mountain on a guided bike tour. Starting up above the clouds (freezing) we got a chance to get our biking legs on bitumen before starting the very rocky and highly dodgy Death Road. When the clouds cleared, the views were stunning all the way down and it was easy to forget just how dangerous this road can be. Taking it at our own pace, we rode under waterfalls, along cliff edges and managed to really enjoy this glorious area. Successfully completing the bike portion of the tour, we got to rest our backsides and get a couple beers in at a hotel for lunch. The real hero of the tour was a cold pool at the hotel as it numbed the muscles and made the bus ride back to La Paz manageable. We couldn’t leave La Paz without trying this amazing feed we had heard about from some travel buddies. Popular Cocina is aptly named, as we found out on arrival - as there was already a line of people 20mins before it opened. We snagged a table and were treated to far too much incredible food for just $18 AUD per person. It was an excellent turn around from our bumpy start to appreciating lively La Paz and being filled with excitement for the adventures ahead.
