A new clash over America’s role in NATO is unfolding on Capitol Hill, just as the alliance issues its starkest warning yet about Russia’s ambitions in Europe. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., this week introduced a bill calling for the United States to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, describing the alliance as “a Cold War relic.” Massie argued that money sent to NATO would be better spent “to defend our own country.” Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, introduced a companion bill in the Senate, giving the long-shot proposal a foothold in both chambers of Congress. The move comes at a moment of heightened anxiety inside NATO.
