EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #156: SKERNE AND WANSFORD Skerne and Wansford – “Stream with Wand’s Ford” Here’s a fun one. This is Skerne and Wansford, which has a very watery theme no matter which way you slice it. It consists of two settlements, both of which have some aquatic landmarks. Skerne is a tiny village that’s built in a lopsided square shape. It’s the smaller of the two, but still contains a Grade I listed church and a pub that was notable for lacking a bar. To the South of the settlement around the course of the West Beck – which is the old River Hull – are the Skerne Wetlands, managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. Arguably its Wansford though which steals most of the limelight here. Its there where we find a second church, another that was commissioned by a man we known very well already – one Sir Tatton Sykes. He was responsible for more than just the church though, because Wansford was once part of the Sledmere estate. Even the village hall is built on land that was once owned by it. Running alongside the B1249 which is Wansford’s main thoroughfare, is the uppermost arm of the Driffield Navigaton. Wansford is the village where the canal becomes no longer publicly navigable owing to a bridge that was fixed shut in the 1960s. It still has a lock though which is easily the most eye catching thing here.
