A healthy heart requires a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle requires an awareness of heart disease. Now imagine an entire community equipped with that awareness. The Singapore Heart Foundation is the only institution in Singapore that runs a structured community-based Heart Wellness Programme. The Heart Wellness Centre provides heavily subsidised Phase 3 and Phase 4 cardiac rehabilitation. Our Heart Support Group provides peer support to heart patients and their families to help them adjust to life after a heart attack, and to motivate them to maintain healthier lifestyles. The Heart Support Group also organises regular local and overseas outings for its members and their families. The Heart Support Fund offers grants and subsidies to patients to defray the cost of a mechanical heart disease or surgery. Patients with income loss after heart surgery can be assisted by the Emergency Relief Fund. In an effort to get people trained in CPR and AED, the Singapore Heart Foundation offers regular classes weekly. All certification courses include a theory and practical test, in accordance with guidelines from the Singapore Resuscitation and First Aid Council, so participants can confidently utilise lifesaving skills during cardiac emergencies. To further heart health awareness, the Singapore Heart Foundation reaches out to the community through various events. These community events target the young and old, as well as families. Participants can attend health screenings, talks, and roadshows to learn more about cardiovascular disease and nutrition. With the BP Initiative @ Schools programme, Primary 5 students learn about the importance of healthy blood pressure readings. Students bring home a monitor on loan to share what they've learned with their families. Events, workshops, and initiatives like these educate and empower the public on heart health in a fun and interactive way. There is even a mass salt taste test to create awareness of the effects of prolonged excessive salt intake. As a non-profit organisation, the Singapore Heart Foundation relies heavily on the support of its volunteers. They come from all walks of life and they work relentlessly towards a healthier Singapore. Volunteers even include members of the board of directors. Thanks to initiatives and programmes organised by the Singapore Heart Foundation, Singaporeans both young and old are one step closer to making healthier lifestyle changes for a healthier heart.
