#1 Cushion Foot Stomp at Mike Durham’s Whitley Bay Classic Jazz Party 2011 The Hot Antic Jazz Band play Clarence Williams. The Hot Antic's are Michel Bastide (trumpet); Phillippe Guignier (reeds); Michel (Le Vicompte) Bescont (reeds); Jean-Pierre Dubois (banjo, guitar); Christian Lefeure (brass bass); with guests Kris Kompen (trombone); Raymond Graisier (washboard) and Mike Durham (trumpet). 2011 marked the First Whitley Bay Classic Jazz Party being also the 21st Whitley Bay International Jazz Festival in its new Jazz Party format. Mike Durham moved The Festival from early July to early November and adopted a format where each themed session will last for either 25 minutes or 55 minutes and be performed in the ballroom of The Village Hotel, with a jam session late each evening lasting into the early hours in the hotel’s bar. Every session is now themed and directed by a band leader who selects musicians from the 35 or so musicians invited, including members of the specially selected bands invited to appear at the First Jazz Party. Those bands were Michel Bastide’s Hot Antic Jazz Band (France); Keith Nichols’ Blue Devils Orchestra (UK); Bent Persson & his Orchestra and Hot Five & Hot Seven (Sweden). In future years the Jazz Party was to move completely away from inviting bands and to invite only a selection of the world’s leading classic jazz musicians and vocalists. Some 2011 musicians have been booked for almost every Jazz Party through to 2020. They include – Keith Nichols (piano, vocals, organiser); Josh Duffee (drums); Matthias Seuffert (reeds); Nick Ward (drums); Enrico Tomasso (trumpet); Alistair Allen (trombone); Jean-Francois Bonnel (reeds); Martin Wheatley (banjo, guitar); Richard Pite (drums, string & brass bass); Henry Lemair (banjo, guitar, string bass); Andy Schumm (cornet, reeds, piano); Phil Rutherford (brass bass). Other notable core musicians appearing in 2011 who were to return were Mike Durham (who appeared again in 2012 and he organised the 2013 Party, but had sadly passed away before it took place); Norman Field (reeds, until his retirement from playing); Frans Sjostrom ( bass sax, also helped to organise the Party, with Keith Nichols, after 2013); Duke Heitger (trumpet); Mauro Porro (multi-instrumentalist coming back again in 2020); Paul Asaro (piano); Bent Persson (cornet); Paul Munnery (trombone who sadly passed away in 2019). More musicians were soon to join the core - Martin Litton (piano), Spats Langham (banjo, guitar, vocals); Malcolm Sked (string and brass bass); Claus Jacobi (reeds, bass sax, organiser); Graham Hughes (trombone, string & brass bass); Richard Exall (reeds); Emma Fisk (violin).
