Throughout the 1990s the IRA made use of sniper teams around South Armagh killing security forces. They used high-calibre Barrett sniper rifles with rounds capable of tearing through body armour. The rifles had been smuggled in from the US. The South Armagh sniping campaign began in 1990 but they missed their targets until they killed Private Paul Turner in Crossmaglen in August 1992. They would go on to kill 6 further soldiers and 2 policemen. Lance Bombardier Stephen Restorick, aged 23, was shot and killed in February 1997 in Bessbrook. He was the last soldier to be killed in Northern Ireland until a dissident attack in 2009. There was not in fact one sniper but rather two teams operating in different parts of South Armagh. In April 1997 an SAS team captured one of the sniper groups arresting 4 men. #IRA #UVF #UDA #troubles #northernireland #northernirelandconflict #northernirelandtroubles #thetroubles
