Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da was written by Paul McCartney in India on the Beatles trip in Spring of 1968. Paul pulled the phrase from a friend whom he had met in a club in London, Jimmy Scott. Paul liked the phrase and obviously made a song around it. The song famously was the first crack in the Beatles’ relationship. The other three Beatles hated the song and the amount of time they were taking to record it. Paul insisted on re-recording the song numerous times with different arrangements to get a perfect take. The band had spent about 42 hours on this one song which wasn’t entirely unusual as they spent about the same amount of time recording Strawberry Fields Forever a year prior but the band had grown tired of this song as it was more of Paul’s perfectionism that drove the sessions long. Recording of this song began on Wednesday July 3rd of 1968. It was remade twice during that first session. Paul and Ringo recorded acoustic guitar and drums onto a rhythm track. Paul overdubbed vocals and additional guitar onto take seven but Paul later decided take four was better and added guitar overdubs to that too. The next day, July 4th, he added lead vocals and John and George sung backing vocals. The day after that, July 5th, there saxophones were recorded and Jimmy Scott played bongos. On July 8th Paul had decided to scrap the whole thing and start over. The band recorded dozens of takes playing everything live. Paul played bass, George played acoustic guitar, John played Honky Tonk piano, and Ringo played drums. After this, John had grown incredibly tired of the recording and came into the studio under an immense amount of drugs. He sat at the piano and banged the introduction. John directed the band and insisted that this is how they should start the song. The rest of the band were amazed and went with it. That day they recorded about 12 takes and overdubbed lead vocals, backing vocals, and percussion onto the 12th take. The next day, July 9th, Paul started another remake of the song but it was then scrapped and he continued with overdubs on the previous take. The backing vocals that were done the previous night were redone and sound effects along with handclaps were also overdubbed. On July 11 there saxophones were recorded again with another bass part. Four days later, July 15, Paul recorded his lead vocal and the song was at last complete. For John’s piano part, I used the Numa Player app on IOS on the Upright piano setting. I added a lot of treble and a little chorus. For Paul’s brief piano part, I used the Module app also on IOS. I only pulled the treble down all the way. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da was released on November 22, 1968 on the Beatles White Album.
