Check out Katie Lee's website and genetic counseling-related digital downloads here: https://www.katieleecgc.com/shop You can find her relevant blog posts here: https://www.katieleecgc.com/blog I'm Katie Lee Hornberger, a multi-state licensed, certified genetic counselor with 7+ years of reproductive genetic counseling experience. I've worked in a clinic setting, a lab setting, and in multiple industry roles including a start-up and a small business where I was the first and only GC on staff. I love the field of reproductive genetic counseling and helping people grow their families, but beyond that I also enjoy teaching and training current GC students. My vision for this channel is to inspire aspiring genetic counselors by providing insights into the career and application process. My hope is that by making information on genetic counseling widely available and showing a friendly genetic counselor face, a more diverse set of applicants will be inspired to explore a career in genetic counseling. On Wannabe Wednesday I post content on the application process including tips on editing your CV, personal statement, and how to answer grad school interview questions. Beyond that I demystify common questions about genetic counseling like how much do you get paid and whether or not genetic counseling is a stressful career. If this content sounds interesting to you, please subscribe to my channel and ring the notification bell! While other GCs have monetized application help, I am committed to sharing lots of tips for free so you don't want to miss out Match Day 2021 has come and gone. I am sending a huge, warm congratulations to all of the applicants who matched with a genetic counseling program. And for those of you who did not match- I am sorry- the application process is lengthy and all-consuming and I know you invested your time, money, and efforts. Today is part three of a four-part series for applicants who did not match. During this series, I am sharing interviews with four women who didn't match with a GC program. Two women continued applying until they matched and two moved on to a different school or career path. They'll all share about how they coped with the bad news and what helped them decide to switch gears to a different career or gear up for another admission cycle. Today's interview is with my friend Lauren. Lauren graduated from UCLA in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology and Society, and will begin an MPH in Public Health Genetics program this fall at the University of Pittsburgh, with scholarships to attend. She applied to genetic counseling programs twice, interviewing at 3 universities in 2018 and 8 universities in 2020. Although the decision to pursue a different path was a difficult one, she hopes that sharing her experiences will be helpful for others who are debating whether or not to reapply to genetic counseling programs. Check out the two Public Health Genetics Programs Lauren referenced here: https://publichealth.pitt.edu/human-g... https://iphg.biostat.washington.edu/p... I hope you enjoy the interview! Chapters
