✍︎ Introduction : The name of Clarence Seward Darrow (1857-1938)—who, in the words of Emanuel Haldeman-Julius (1889-1951), was “a kindly, tolerant, but disillusioned man*” —, “immediately brings up recollections of Loeb and Leopold [1924], the McNamara Brothers [1911], John Thomas Scopes [1925] and others who have been defended by his legal genius […] which always sought justice or mercy, not law, even telling juries that they were free to disregard the law and decide issues as their conscience and heart dictated**”. “Originally Mr. Darrow came from Trumbull County, Ohio, where he was born in 1857. He studied law in the office of a justice of the peace, and was admitted to the bar [1878] shortly after he became of age.
