The Vietnam War - An Irishman’s Diary Michael John Coyne 1945 - 2020 On 4 July 1968, an Irishman, Michael John Coyne, woke up in a US Army hospital after surviving a malaria fever. Michael is one of the unknown number of Irish who served during the Vietnam War. Before he passed away in 2020, he sat down with his son and recorded his time with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment ‘Blackhorse’ U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1967 - 1968. His story is a harrowing one. During his service Michael was awarded five Purple Hearts for wounds received, two Bronze Stars with “V” Device for actions under fire, and the Infantry Combat Badge. This recording is unique and a national treasure in more ways than one. The footage used in this recording was filmed by Michael himself. Michael was a long-term member of The American Legion Post IR-63 ‘John F. Kennedy’, Veterans of Foreign Wars VFW, and a huge supporter of our work in recording Irish veterans’ accounts. It was an honour to have known him. Thank you to the Coyne family for the privilege of releasing Michael’s story on our channel Ireland’s Military Story.
