ACCESS ROADS TO SOMAWATHIYA , DAMBULLA Take dambulla to matale road (A9) and go about 2.5km from Dambulla, turn to Siri Walagamba piriwena road to the right. About 1.5km along this road passing piriwena, Somawathiya dagaba (Stupa) Archeological site can be seen on your right. Go along Dambulla to Kurunegala road about 1.5km from Dambulla and turn left (Siri Walagamba piriwena road) about 500m along this road you can see the somawathiya Archeological site to your left. Somawathiya archeological site is situated near Dambulla in matale district Sri lanka. It is a well restored Buddhist monastery complex with a long history. A several number of ruins were discovered during the excavation at this site. Stupa (Dagaba), Bodhi tree shrine, Chapter house are some of the main buildings were among the findings. There are few moonstones, Guardstones and korawak gal too. The current name somawathiya is derived from a folklore that the remains of queen somawathi, are interned here. According to the historical evidence this might be the chatapabbatha vihara built by king Saddathissa at the base of the Dambulla rock. The initial dagaba was built by king saddathissa. It is a small one and King Walagamba expanded it. There is a another opinion about that. However Archeologist have dated the initial brick dagaba to the 5th or 6th century AD and subsequent renovations to 6th to 9th century AD. There are about 80 caves with drip ledges have been found on the boulder slop behind the site. It is beautifully located among the trees, Paddy – fields and the base of the Dambulla rock.
