Pain is a danger signal. The brain generates pain to warn us of physical threats and motivate us to take action to prevent bodily harm. But sometimes, the brain can interpret danger where there is none, almost like a false alarm. Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) helps patients learn to interpret sensations correctly. When the pain accurately reflects danger, the patient will take necessary action to prevent further damage. But, when the pain is either a false alarm or an overreaction to neutral/semi-neutral sensations, the patient will learn to deactivate danger signals and, subsequently, pain. This webinar distinguishes between pain rooted in physical damage, brain-generated pain, and amplified/mixed pain. Participants will learn how fear fuels pain and how to eliminate primary pain using this evidence-based psychological model. PRT techniques will be introduced to help patients regulate fear and anxiety to decrease the intensity of symptoms amplified by worry, preoccupation, hypervigilance, hopelessness, despair, and similar negative feeling states that are all too familiar to this population.
