A devoted disciple of Brahmasri Papanasam Sivan, he was celebrated for his deeply expressive renditions of Tamil kritis and viruthams, which reflected profound bhakti and emotional intensity. Influenced by stalwarts like Madurai Mani Iyer and G. N. Balasubramaniam, his music beautifully blended classical precision with heartfelt devotion. Known for his nuanced manodharma, he approached improvisation with a balance of imagination, discipline, and emotion. He was particularly fond of singing viruthams and often emphasized that one must give utmost importance to the short and long syllables while rendering them, ensuring that the lyrical beauty and meaning of the sahityam were never compromised. His deep understanding of the text (sahityam) and his ability to emotionally connect with every phrase struck a chord with both seasoned musicians and lay listeners alike. Balasubramaniam’s artistry was not merely technical but profoundly spiritual, he multitasked seamlessly as performer, thinker, and evaluator, all within the moment of performance. Shunning fame and wealth, he often reminded others that he owed his very existence to Carnatic music. His passing in 2004 left behind a quiet yet enduring legacy of sincerity, devotion, and artistry that continues to inspire musicians and rasikas today.
