Mayor, State Leaders Discuss Funding for Homeless Operations at Convention Center EMERGENCY STATE GRANT IS SECURED BY SAN DIEGO AS ‘OPERATION SHELTER TO HOME’ WELCOMES HUNDREDS MORE TODAY In a show of solidarity among state and local leaders as San Diego helps homeless individuals amid the COVID-19 crisis, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer was joined by State Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins and State Assemblymembers Todd Gloria and Lorena Gonzalez to discuss state funds coming to the region for emergency homeless needs due to the pandemic. The City Council unanimously voted to accept the funds to support efforts already underway at the San Diego Convention Center. Operation Shelter to Home aims to prevent the spread of the virus among San Diego’s homeless population by creating more shelter space, allowing room between individuals per guidelines from public health officials, and centralizing limited shelter staff. The City will act as the fiscal agent for a pool of state funds that combine $3.7 million awarded to the City of San Diego and $1.5 million and $1.8 million allotted to the County of San Diego and the Regional Task Force on the Homeless respectively.
