This week on Clown-versations, we sit down with the Canadian clown, actor, director, and master teacher JOE DE PAUL, whose career has leapt from classical theatre to big-top brilliance — and everywhere in between. A META Award–winning actor for Head À Tëte, Joe has appeared on screen in films and series like Bonnano: A Godfather Story, Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and more. But in 1999, he followed a different calling — straight into the circus ring. As a featured clown with Cirque du Soleil, Joe performed in the North American tour and Emmy Award–winning film of Dralion, launching an international career defined by bold physical comedy and razor-sharp presence. From Salto Natale to Palazzo, from Cirque Zanzibar to tours across Europe with Los Galindos, Joe’s work has delighted audiences across continents. He co-founded the Collectif Clown International de Marseille, shaping the future of contemporary clowning, and has taught at elite institutions including the National Theatre School of Canada and L’École Nationale du Cirque. As a director, he’s guided clowns in major Cirque productions including AmaLuna, KÀ, and Drawn to Life, and helmed over 15 productions of Teatro ZinZanni across Seattle, San Francisco, and Chicago. Most recently, Joe was part of the world premiere of Water for Elephants at the Alliance Theatre in 2023. In this conversation, we explore what it means to devote your life to clowning — the craft, the risk, the absurdity, and the deep humanity beneath the red nose.
