This week’s Clown-versation guest is Tyler West, a New York–based clown whose work has been praised by The New York Times as “tireless… always in the moment, reacting to whatever everybody around him is doing without coming across as obnoxious,” following his performance in ONEOFUS’ Dick Rivington & The Cat. Originally from Tucson, Arizona, Tyler’s path to clowning began in seventh grade after seeing a Cirque du Soleil show—a moment that sent him down a YouTube rabbit hole of clown research and mirror-made funny faces. He later earned a B.F.A. in Acting from the University of Arizona before relocating to New York City in 2019, where he quickly found his footing in burlesque and variety shows. Since then, Tyler’s career has taken him around the world, dazzling audiences across circus, theatre, and fringe festivals. He has worked under the direction of acclaimed artists including Jessica Stone, Cal McCrystal, Julie Atlas Muz, and Mat Fraser, and trained with renowned clown teachers such as Philippe Gaulier, Aitor Basauri, David Shiner, and Sophie Amieva. His award-winning solo show THE WAIT has toured internationally, earning honors including Best Storytelling (London Fringe) and Staff Pick (Minnesota Fringe). Tyler has performed with companies and venues such as Spiegelworld, Giffords Circus, La Clique, The Box, House of Yes, Bindlestiff Family Circus, and festivals worldwide.
