Iman Lizarazu is a Basque-born mime, clown, and juggler whose extraordinary life bridges circus, science, and humanitarian work. Raised between the Basque Country and Moscow, she began performing at age six in The Nutcracker and trained intensively in classical ballet and traditional circus arts at the Moscow Circus gym. As a teenager in Dresden, Germany, she continued her circus training while also pursuing advanced academics, eventually earning a PhD cum laude in astrophysics from the Max Planck Institute in Munich. Alongside her scientific career, Iman has devoted decades to socially engaged performance. She has been active with Clowns Without Borders since 1993, performing and teaching in refugee camps, orphanages, hospitals, prisons, and communities affected by war and disaster across Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas. She also helped establish the first circus school in eastern Africa in Nairobi, Kenya, through the award-winning Kuruka Maisha program. Fluent in many languages, Iman chooses silence in her work, expressing herself through mime, clowning, and juggling. She trained with legendary mime Marcel Marceau and renowned masters Julie Goell and Avner the Eccentric. She is also co-creator of Renegade Juggling, a leading global supplier of juggling equipment. Her 90-minute solo show, Basquette Case, is a poetic, humorous journey through one sleepless night, revealing a deeply human clown character filled with grace, imagination, and heart.
