Marshall Christensen, Ph.D. Former President of Warner Pacific University and Founder of Co-Serve International May, 2010 In 1970 Robert Greenleaf coined the term "servant leadership" in an essay entitled "The Servant as Leader." He described this kind of leader as one who wants to serve--to serve first. That person, he wrote, is "sharply different from one who is leader first." Over the past four decades a growing number of leaders have taken note of Greenleaf's ideas, successfully applying his principles in a wide range of venues. Co-Serve International, an Oregon-based public charity, has been sharing the concepts of servant leadership with students and teachers at international universities, as well as with business and church leaders. Dr. Marshall Christensen, founder of Co-Serve, will discuss how servant leadership transforms ideas and practices of future leaders around the world. Marshall Christensen is the founder of Co-Serve International, a public foundation that promotes servant leadership at universities in Central Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and the United States. Each year the foundation's Servant Leadership Academy draws international students to Oregon. Marshall was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. He took his Ph.D. in history at the University of Oregon and from 1981 through 1996 served as the President of Warner Pacific College in Portland. He is a former member of the Mercy Corps International board of directors and has traveled extensively. He is the Provost of the Kazakh-American Free University and, in 2009, was awarded the "Medal of Honor" by the Kazakhstan Ministry of Education. He and Joyce have been married for 46 years, have 4 children and 12 grandchildren. Professionally Speaking is a resource to the business and professional community.
