Through glorifying his historical deeds and virtuous spirit, it shapes the image of a loyal, wise, and just deity. Bi Gan, as the uncle and prime minister of King Zhou of the Shang Dynasty, was renowned for his loyal counsel and assistance in governing the state. He met his tragic end by being disemboweled for advising against King Zhou's tyranny. Afterward, he drank a divine charm bestowed by Jiang Ziya (a legendary figure in Chinese mythology) and, despite his disembowelment, was able to walk, earning him the title of the 'God Without a Heart.' Because he was 'without a heart,' he was impartial and free from greed, managing wealth with benevolence and fairness. Consequently, Taoism enshrined him as the Civil God of Wealth, overseeing wealth and justice. In the past, Bi Gan was mainly worshipped by merchants, symbolizing that merchants should uphold honesty, avoid greed and partiality, and pray for thriving business and abundant profits.
