TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Is 58: 7-10 Psalm — Ps 111: 4-9 Second Reading — 1 Cor 2: 1-5 Gospel Reading — Mt 5: 13-16 Salt, Light, and a City on the Hill Today’s Gospel offers three clear images of discipleship: salt, light, and a city set on a mountain—three reminders that faith is meant to be lived, not only believed. Salt is small, but it changes what it touches. It adds flavour and it preserves. In the same way, Christians are called to quietly make life better: to bring kindness into harsh spaces, truth into confusion, and peace into conflict. Salt also stings when it meets a wound—sometimes doing what is right may be uncomfortable, but it can also be healing. If salt loses its taste, it becomes useless; likewise, if we compromise our values to fit in, our witness becomes bland. Light exists to be seen. A lamp is not lit to be hidden, but to give guidance and warmth. Our faith should shine through mercy, honesty, patience, forgiveness, and courage—especially when no one is watching. The goal is not to draw attention to ourselves, but to let others see God’s goodness reflected in our lives. Finally, a city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. This image reminds us that witness is not only personal, but communal. The Church is meant to be a visible sign of hope—a place where the weary can find welcome, where the lost can find direction, and where love is lived in concrete ways. When we live as salt and light together, we become that city: not perfect, but real, and pointing beyond ourselves to the Father. #Fifthsundayinordinarytime #catholicmass #8february2026 #LIVESTREAM #HolyCross #Frhenrysiew #Frandrewlin #FrJohnKing #FrAnthonyHo #CardinalWilliamGoh #baptism #HolyMass
