The village on the plains was inhabited from ancient times and gained particular importance during the Middle Ages, when several noble families established their residence here. The imposing castle that dominates the village was built on a hill behind the private chapel of the Counts of Biandrate, lords of Briona in the 12th century. The Italian fortress was extended in the early 16th century, while their church was declared a parish church by the bishop. The first documents attesting to the oratory dedicated to the Virgin of the Snows date back to 1597, although it had been functioning as such for decades. The new church was built in the 15th century on the foundations of an earlier oratory, as suggested by the architectural style similar to contemporary sacred buildings attached to Franciscan convents. The Gothic church was provided with a single wide nave, covered by a precious terracotta ceiling. The original façade was completed at the end of the 18th century, while the tall bell tower was erected a century earlier at the behest of Cardinal Taverna. The bell tower was embellished in 1927 with the casting of a new concert of bells, made by the historic Achille Mazzola bell foundry. The E-flat major concert was mutilated during the Second World War when the two major bells were requisitioned by the state. The new bells were paid for in 1951 as war damage, totalling 1590 kg of bronze. e' flat - f' - g' - a' flat - b' flat Over the centuries, many interventions took place on the monument. A layer of lime had gradually submerged the precious frescoes dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, which are partly visible thanks to restoration work. The first chapel on the right houses a glass urn with the relics of the holy knight Alexander, patron saint of the village. Two friends and I were invited to ring the bells to honour the patron saint, celebrated with a solemn procession accompanied by the band and the ringing of bells on a mechanical keyboard. #italy #bells #church #bell #culture #landscape #medieval #friends #catholicchurch #cinematic #keyboard #catholic
