Living Alone in Malaysia: Experiencing Merdeka for the First Time

In this episode, I experienced Malaysia’s Independence Day — Merdeka — for the very first time as an expat living in Kuala Lumpur. 🇲🇾 Before the big day, I visited the Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Memorial on Friday, where I learned about Malaysia’s road to independence. From the Proclamation of Independence document to photographs from the eve of 31 August 1957, the exhibitions gave me a deeper understanding of how Merdeka came to life. On 31 August 2025, I joined thousands at Dataran Putrajaya to watch the Merdeka Day Parade from start to finish — featuring the giant Jalur Gemilang, military arsenals, cultural performances, floats, and an aerial fly-past. The atmosphere was unforgettable, filled with cheers, flags, and chants of “Merdeka!” I ended the day at KLCC, where the Petronas Twin Towers glowed in the colors of the Jalur Gemilang — the perfect way to close my first Merdeka experience in Malaysia.
