Songkhla Old Town | A Slow Day in Southern Thailand’s Historic Coastal Town

Songkhla Old Town is one of Southern Thailand’s most fascinating historic districts — and in this episode, I spent a slow and meaningful day exploring its streets, stories, and coastline. Traveling by public van from Hat Yai, I arrived at the Songkhla Clock Tower and began walking through the old town’s three historic roads: Nakhon Nok, Nakhon Nai, and Nang Ngam. Once known as Singora, Songkhla was a powerful maritime trading port shaped by Thai, Chinese, and Malay communities — a true tri-cultural heritage city that is now on the UNESCO Tentative List. From the iconic red rice mill at Hub Ho Hin to the unique Sino-European architecture preserved in private museums, this town tells a story very different from Thailand’s former royal capitals like Ayutthaya or Sukhothai. Here, the lagoon meets the sea — and history feels alive. I also visited the peaceful coastline near the Golden Mermaid statue, inspired by the epic poem of Sunthorn Phu. Unlike the busy beaches of Phuket, Songkhla offers a quieter, pine-fringed shoreline where daily life unfolds gently. This video is part of my Southern Thailand journey following my Hat Yai episode.
