[29] Treasuring the Word of the LORD [Deut 6:4-9] - J Fourie

In this message we continue our teachings in the book of Deuteronomy. We are in one of the most important passages of scripture not only to the Jewish mind but also to the church as a whole. We see through the Shema that the Lord is the one true God and that there is no other beside Him. Because this is true it is Moses's exhortation to Israel that they love the Lord their God with all their hearts, souls, and strength. We look at these various aspects of the verse and seek to unpack it and we see that the Lord then commands each one of them to keep these words in their hearts. The word narrowly is Speaking of the exhortation in the Shema and the first and greatest commandment and also yet the whole teachings of Moses through this sermon. Moses is teaching an extremely important portion of practicality and application and he wants each and every individual within Israel to teach these commandments diligently. It is to teach with a sharp, incisive, and insightful manner giving their children a deep understanding of the will of God. God's word cuts to the core and it needs to be understood critically for the children in order to build them on the one true faith! Each family is in covenant with God and therefore it is an extremely important exhortation to teach theological truths, practical truths, and applicable truths. This can be done through studies such as apologetics and thematic studies. God is looking for ugly offspring and he is looking for the Israelites to understand that in all aspects and spheres of life they are to teach their children. Whether it be sitting, walking or lying or sleeping! Lastly, we see that the commandments of God ought to be guiding the actions of the believer which will be a clear sign of the covenant relationship through obedience. It is to have the actions guided by a devotion to God through a love for God and instruction in Him. Lastly, the house is a place where God is to be honored, to live, and to have first place.
