This is by William Goodwin, whose exact dates are not known (18th century). First of all, there is no trumpet stop on this organ. Secondly, the 8' pedal reed has slightly delayed speech. On top of that, I usually only play the final bars of the Adagio section. There are several reasons for this - though in this case I don't leave it out because it's too difficult for me ;-) If I play it in Munich or Vienna as a closing voluntary at RC services, most people start leaving the church and talking as soon as "the organ plays". The best ruse is to play just a few bars fortissimo, then to go over to the bright and jolly Allegro, which is comparatively soft. If one simply plays loudly for 3 minutes, they will get hoarse trying to converse above the volume. In this way, there is also more chance that they will hear some of the jolly bit before they are outside. Few of them will hear the final part of the voluntary, and in fact many organists neglect to practise the last section of a piece, as often the only person left is the sacristan, who may have turned the lights off by then ... including those in the organ gallery. By contrast, most other denominations will sit politely and listen to the entire piece. However, a 35-bar Adagio - whether fortissimo or mezzoforte or even mezzopiano - is not the most inspiring thing to sit through after a normal Sunday service, even if the Allegro is set to cheer them up. They want their coffee and so do I, so I resort then to a different ruse. This voluntary sort of peters out at the end - which indeed scarcely any RC church-goer would notice. So in the other churches I simply pull out a few stops just before the final chord of the trumpet part, and instead of the chord I tack on the same fortissimo bars that I introduced the piece with. That rounds it off nicely. I hope Goodwin approves! Recorded in St Willibrord, Munich, 29th August 2021 - Take 1
