Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death in the world and affects more and more people with each passing year. The cost of treatment presents a barely sustainable burden for patients, their families, and health care systems. To meet this challenge, the CNIC has defined three key goals: To deepen and extend our understanding of cardiovascular health; To optimize disease prevention; To develop advanced and innovative treatments for the most prevalent cardiovascular disorders. Achieving these goals requires advanced research that provides detailed information on the molecular and cellular processes that underlie the disease. But it is also essential that these advances can be translated into improved health promotion, diagnosis, and treatment. To meet these challenges, the CNIC has had to adapt. We have moved on from a structure based on three research areas to one built around seven research programs. These programs embrace approaches from basic research to advanced clinical trials that deliver real health benefits and are built upon proven experience and rooted in advanced technological expertise in cell and animal models, imaging modalities, and massive data processing and analysis. The long-term goal of the CNIC is to ensure the translation of new knowledge into real benefits for society, as well as a return on the public investment in the center. Our accreditation as a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence helps us in our efforts towards this goal by providing core support for key research programs involving basic and clinical researchers. The Severo Ochoa accreditation also greatly strengthens our programs for training tomorrow’s scientists and cardiologists. https://www.cnic.es/es/programas-inve...
