Often times it's easy to forget just how much groove and swagger underlies NIN's music. Closer is the obvious example...but I guess Trent was really heading purposefully in this direction with Hesitation Marks especially with the addition of Pino Palladino both live and in the studio. I saw on certain NIN socials that the band members visited Paisley Park on the Peel It Back tour whilst passing though Minnesota..so it felt like a good time to pay tribute to two of my favourites in this mash up. When I first saw the film Purple Rain in the early 90s ( I would have been 6 or 7 at the time) it completely blew me away and his natural musicality is untouched. I was playing around with some stuff from Hesitation Marks and when Satellite came on I had a brainwave...and with some editing and jiggery pokery I present a NIN x Prince Mashup made in heaven! I am a songwriter by trade - so I approach these in the same way. I don't want to force things together. I want them to sound natural. For this reason, I am not battling to include ALL aspects of the song and I end up having to make some difficult decisions to cut large sections if I don't feel it is needed. Anyway!
