Science On Screen®: "Pushing Limits: Ethics, opportunities, and perils of reproductive technologies" Amherst Cinema, Amherst, MA: April 15, 2025 Film: The Pod Generation (2023) In the 1970s, some feminists dreamed that artificial wombs would liberate women, not only from the dangers and burdens of pregnancy and childbirth, but also from patriarchal control and inequality of the sexes. Others, however, warned of the dangers of reproductive technologies for women's health, as well as the potential for expanded patriarchal control of women's bodies and lives, particularly of women marginalized by race and class. Carrie N. Baker, J.D., Ph.D., Sylvia D'Lugasch Bauman Professor of American Studies and Chair of the Program for the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality at Smith College explains this historical context and current debates around reproductive technologies, their legal regulation and their potential for liberating or subordinating humanity.
