The last time I was in Reykjavik, I was wandering through Lucky Records and I had just found a vinyl copy of Zhrine’s “Unortheta” (an Icelandic black metal band that I discovered on Iceland Air's in-flight entertainment). After I had already paid for the record and promised myself I wouldn't spend more money, a photo book caught my eye on a knee height bookshelf next to the exit. It turns out that I had stumbled across a copy of “Aska” by Thelma Herzl. It is a striking 2012 art book of black-and-white abstract photographs capturing volcanic ash formations near the 2009 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull. The textures in Herzl's ash photographs were inspiring. It's June, 2025, it's dry, and a fire starts just north of town. Eerily close to home, eventually burning 57 hectares. I'm the fire was out and the hillside was deemed safe to hike, Dylan and I hiked to the top to capture some of the aftermath. It took me nearly 2 years to track down a copy of her book. Herzl’s “Aska” is the inspiration behind our short trek to the top of Debeck’s Hill. I sought out to capture the textures left behind after a (thankfully potential) disaster. The textures I found in the burn site were varied; some appear to have bubbled while others dried and cracked. Thanks goes out to Latency Labs (https://www.latencylabs.ca/shop) and Dylan Davies.
