This video is about a wrongful death lawsuit I filed against Excel Ambulance Service regarding a fatal ambulance crash. My name is Tom Zimmerman and I am a Chicago attorney who handles, among other cases, wrongful death and other personal injury cases. When someone applies to the state of Illinois to be an emergency medical technician (EMT), the applicants are on the “honor system” to disclose, among other things, that he or she has been convicted of a felony. Illinois then takes no further action to check the background of these applicants to see if they are being truthful. In this private ambulance crash case, our client was studying to be an EMT. He was on the ambulance to help transport a kidney dialysis patient when the vehicle crashed into a building. All three people on the ambulance died. Toxicology results revealed that the driver of the ambulance had cocaine in his system at the time of the crash. Further investigation revealed that he was an ex-con but might not have disclosed that on his EMT license application. In short, no one is protecting the public from these private ambulance companies. It is critical for the state of Illinois to do background checks on EMTs and to better regulate private ambulance companies. As noted in this video on ABC News, “Even dog walkers face tougher background checks than private EMS employees.” If people knew how little background checking was taking place on these people, the public would be shocked. Illinois ambulance accidents have doubled in the past five years. Only now does the state health director agree that there is a loophole that needs to be closed and that the state is moving toward adopting a fingerprint-based background check. There are 65,000 licensed EMT workers in Illinois. This industry needs to be regulated. In this matter, Zimmerman Law Offices filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the ambulance company on behalf of our client’s spouse.
