"Hello" is a meditation on the past, inspired by the Silent Sunday hashtag and Sergey Cheremisinov's beautiful piece, "Amadines" from "Way to Silence" (2021), and featuring shots that were filmed over ten years ago. This version is an upscaled reproduction using the open source Real-ESRGAN program, forming the second step in a series of experimentations with reformatting this short film. For a full description of the original, please go here: • Hello . For notes on this upscale, see below. ABOUT THIS VERSION This version of the movie was upscaled to 2.5K using the open source Real-ESRGAN program, which can be found here: https://github.com/xinntao/Real-ESRGAN. Our method followed the default one in the manual, where each frame of the video was extracted as a JPG using FFmpeg, then upscaled using the realesr-animevideov3 model, and the upscaled JPGs were then recombined. Recombining the images with FFmpeg had an unsatisfactory level of bitrate noise, so they were instead combined and re-rendered using Kdenlive. The realesr-animevideov3 model is meant for animation, and some of this is most visibly reflected in the shots of Lelly, especially the waves and her jeans, which appear cartoonish and painted. Using the realesrgan-x4plus model, though, resulted in a distorted, tiled image (see this post: https://mastodon.social/@jaybaeta/110.... I could experiment with running the whole video through this model, just to see what a whole video would look like, but it takes longer enough to process that experimenting is prohibitively time-consuming on my current hardware. With the default model, it took just under three hours to upscale 1,847 frames.
