Rodney Burton, better known as Bitcoin Rodney, once flaunted a life of luxury — superyachts, Lamborghinis, and high-profile events — all while promoting one of the largest crypto Ponzi schemes in U.S. history. Burton was a key promoter of HyperFund, a $1.89 billion fraud that promised investors 0.5% to 1% daily returns, allegedly from large-scale crypto mining operations that never existed. Federal prosecutors allege that between June 2020 and November 2022, HyperFund operated as a classic Ponzi scheme, using new investor money to pay earlier members until withdrawals were blocked in mid-2021. Alongside alleged co-founder Sam Lee and fellow promoter Brenda Chunga (who has since pled guilty), Burton is accused of luring thousands into the scheme. Behind the scenes, Burton was also under investigation for drug trafficking and money laundering, with federal agencies — including the FBI, Homeland Security, and the IRS — working together to stack charges. His downfall was cinematic: arrested at an airport with a one-way ticket to Dubai, denied bail as a flight risk, and now facing trial for conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business.
