With some 500 million in records sold in his 35-year career (20-years for Walt Disney Records) composer/producer Gary Powell returns to the classroom, teaching music students "the business" of music at The University of Texas at Austin's Butler School of Music. In this public lecture on September 5, 2013 on the UT Austin campus, Gary shares his passion for how best we might create a new economic model that would help musicians earn a living wage. It is no longer enough for musicians to perform and record music with hope as their only strategy. The current business model for producing and performing musicians is disordered; profits are hidden and talent is obscured. It's time for all musicians to learn and adopt strategies to become effective entrepreneurs. Several music professionals from the audience chime in on the situation, including Conor McAnally, a 5 time British Academy Award winner who worked with U2 in their early years.
