Interpretation of a folk dance that originates from Philippines. Done by Culture Philippines of Ontario, Canada. Recorded in Valença, Portugal, on 02/08/2025. https://culturephilippinesofontario.com/ Bailes folclóricos filipinos interpretados pola Culture Philippines of Ontario, de Canadá. Gravado en Valença o 02/08/2025 no 40º Festival FolkMonção O Mundo a Dançar. Explanation of the dances: Pangalayis a meditative dance executed with downcast eyes and dignified facial expression. Pangalay consists of simple yet intricate postures and gestures basic to the traditional dances of the Sulu Archipelago. Knees are bent with a slow and subtle bouncing motion to depict the lightness and undulating motion of gentle waves. It is followed by a danced called Kapagapir-apir. Kapagapir-apir is a stately dance that depicts royalty among the Maranao people of Mindanao. In this dance, the ladies gracefully manipulate the fans while emphasizing their small steps, or kini-kini. These movements are a symbolism of good manners and prominent family background. For finale performance, Culture Philippines of Ontario perform “Singkil.” Singkil is the most famous dance of the Maranao ethnic group in Lanao del Sur. The dance imitates the graceful movements of Princess Gandingan as she leaps from rock to rock. Bamboo poles are struck together to imitate the crashing of rocks during earthquakes.
