The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (Tower of Terror for short) is an attraction located in Disney's Hollywood Studios and Walt Disney Studios Park theme parks. It's a free fall set in a classic Hollywood hotel, in which guests are transported to the Twilight Zone by a lightning strike in the elevators. Tower of Terror has also been an attraction at Disney California Adventure Park; however, it closed on January 3, 2017, only to be re-branded as Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout!, a similar attraction. Tokyo DisneySea has an attraction with a similar concept (a hotel elevator as a free-fall attraction): Hotel Hightower. Although the concept is the same, this attraction does not take place within the theme of The Twilight Zone, but within a setting developed by Disney itself. The former version at Disney California Adventure Park and the version at Walt Disney Studios Park are almost identical. The main difference is in language: in the California version the voice-over during the ride is in English, in the Paris version it is in French. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney's Hollywood Studios can be found at the far end of Hollywood Land. In the Walt Disney Studios Park, the attraction can be found in Production Courtyard. In both parks, the Hollywood Tower Hotel is designed in Pueblo Deco style with a small garden. Outside is a sign of the Hollywood Tower Hotel, through which the words Tower of Terror appear regularly through fiber optic lighting. Guests enter the attraction via the queue, which leads briefly through the garden but almost immediately into the hotel lobby. This lobby is full of dust and appears to have been abandoned after the night of October 31, 1939. The hotel's public elevators look battered; in front of it is a sign that says "Out of order." Guests are then split into two rows: either to the left or to the right. Both queues end up at a library, in which suddenly a clap of thunder sounds and the lights go out, but the previously described episode of The Twilight Zone begins on the television. After Rod Serling invites the guests to board the staff elevator, another thunderclap sounds and a secret wall opens that gives access to the hotel's cellars. These cellars form the entry point of the attraction; here guests are pre-sorted by the staff towards one of the 6 boarding points (3 upstairs, 3 downstairs), before entering the staff elevator (the actual attraction). Once guests have boarded and the elevator doors close, the elevator moves backwards. The boarding area dissolves into a starry sky and a rotating spiral is projected onto the elevator doors. Then the elevator rises several floors. There the doors open and there is a view of a hotel corridor with a large horizontal mirror, in which guests can see themselves. When lightning strikes, the reflection of the guests fades into a number of ghostly apparitions, after which these apparitions also dissolve into nothingness. Then the elevator doors close again, after which the elevator rises a number of floors again. When the doors also open on another floor, a hotel corridor can be seen where the ghosts of the 5 missing elevator passengers of October 31, 1939 appear. They beckon the guests to come to them, but then lightning strikes and these ghosts are sucked into an elevator shaft, after which the entire corridor dissolves into a starry sky. The elevator with the ghosts seems to plummet vertically and then dissolve into the same starry sky. Then the elevator doors close again and the free fall program of the attraction is activated - by randomizing a number of free fall programs, this program is different every time. During this program an attraction photo of the elevator is taken at the top of the tower. When the free fall program is over, the elevator descends to the level of a boarding station and drives forward back to the elevator doors. Guests can then exit the elevator and exit the attraction past the attraction photo screens and through the gift shop (Tower Hotel Gifts).
