Yester Times sits firmly in D natural minor, letting the harmony do the reminiscing while the voices do the arguing. The cadence drifts from Dm → Dm7 into BbM7 and Gm7, then circles back through Bb, Gm, Am and C, like memories that refuse to stay in chronological order. Rhythmically it’s restrained and conversational: one bar, one thought, one chord—no rushing, just enough space for regret to stretch its legs. The male voice leads each bar with blunt, almost factual statements (“I was”, “I went”, “I did”, “Did I dream”), while the female voice slips in between, parenthetical and gently sarcastic, answering from the present tense as if reality had been waiting patiently all along. Pads and loops stay warm and slightly dusty, more diary than dancefloor, until the progression itself starts doing the emotional modulation. It’s not nostalgia—it’s a polite argument with the past, set to chords that remember things slightly differently every time.
