How To Reset The Check Engine Light Without A Scanner (Simple Guide). In this video tutorial I will show you how to reset the check engine light without a scanner. Here’s how to do it: Drive your car. • Ensure all the internal issues causing the engine light to turn on are solved. • Next, insert the key into the ignition and turn on your car. • Drive your car for about 10-25 miles with a speed of about 25mph. This allows the car’s onboard computer to reassess the system after minor fixes, and turn off the check engine light if the issue is resolved. • Check if the engine light is gone. • If the check engine light doesn't go off on the first day, you can repeat the same process for a few more days. • Driving your car resolves minor problems like loose gas gaps. • If the light persists, let's check on the next step. Turn your car off and then on repeatedly. • Insert the car key in the ignition. • Turn the key until the dashboard engine indicator lights are on but the engine is yet to start. • Turn the car’s ignition key back to the off position. • Repeat these steps two more times. • Start your car to check if the engine light has gone off. • This method helps your car's computer system reset itself, solving the minor glitches that cause the check engine light to turn on. • Note that this method works for minor issues and may be ineffective for complex problems affecting the engine. By disconnecting the car battery. • Ensure you’re working in a safe area with the car turned off and the key removed from the ignition. • Next, access the engine compartment. The engine compartment is usually in the car’s bonnet. • Locate the batterie’s location inside the compartment. • Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery and put it away from other parts of the battery. • Wait for 20-30 minutes. • Next, with the help of a nearby friend, hold the horn button for about 30 seconds to drain the capacitor's power. • Reattach the disconnected negative terminal and close the car’s bonnet to finish the process. • It is important to note that disconnecting the battery may reset other settings, such as your radio presets or clock. If the check engine light remains on, or if you suspect a more serious issue, consult a mechanic or use an OBD-II scanner for a more detailed diagnosis.
