Here’s what happens when a police captain quits to become an organ grinder. Glen Buckner decided that a career in law enforcement at the Morrow Georgia Police Department wasn’t for him. So, he followed his dream. Glen loves monkeys, organ music and children. The logical conclusion was to become an organ grinder. He became Frin Glen and his partner is Willie the capuchin monkey. The “Monkey Man” is one of a vanishing group. Organ Grinders were one of the first street musicians but now there are only about ten organ grinders left. Glen admits that Willie is the star. He told me that he works for the monkey. They appear at about 50 locations a year. Glen turns the handle on his 75-year-old German crank organ and Willy does the rest. This story aired on WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News in 1975. UPDATE – I guess that “monkey business” is a tough occupation. In 1980 Glen retired Willie and opened Buckners Family Restaurant in Jackson, Georgia. Over 40 years later the family business is still going strong. The Traveler series with Andy Johnston was an Emmy award winning program that showcased amazing people, unusual things, local legends, food finds, outdoor activities, folk art, and family fun. In 2022 the Walter J. Brown Media Archives at the University of Georgia founded The Original Georgia Traveler -- Andy Johnston Collection to preserve and maintain the stories. This story is presented for educational and preservation purposes and is covered under Fair Use. At the time it was broadcast the television station had a blanket music license with ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. The station maintains that license today. All music used is covered under that agreement. Note - This story aired over 45 years ago. Today, wild animals or exotic animals including monkeys are not permitted to be kept as pets in Georgia. #streetmusic #crazymusic #originalgeorgiatraveler #favoriteyoutubers #heartland #rufushussey
