Experimental Modelling of Catalyst Materials at the Atomic Scale Bio: Dr. Hans-Joachim Freund earned his B.S. in Chemistry and Physics from the University of Cologne, Germany, in 1972. He went on to pursue his PhD in Chemistry under the guidance of Dr. Georg Hohlneicher. After he obtained his PhD in 1978, Dr. Freund took a postdoctoral fellow position at the University of Pennsylvania and Xerox Corporation, Webster. He went on to work as a Professor at the University of Cologne, then at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg for four years, a Professor at Ruhr University Bochum for nine years, and became the Director and Scientific Member of the Chemical Physics Department at the Fritz-Haber Institute in 1996. Dr. Freund’s research spans the fields of solid surface physics, structure and dynamics of oxide surfaces, heterogenous catalytic model systems, and nanostructures. He retired last year after 23 years in this position; he was honored with the title of Emeritus Professor. In addition to holding Guest Professorships at universities around the world including Northwestern, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Technology and Science in China, and the Institute for Catalysis in Hokkaido Japan, Dr. Freund has also been honored with the title of Fellow or honorary member in chemical societies around the world, including Germany, America, Japan, and China. Dr. Freund has been honored with an extensive list of awards and honors, only several of which are: the Centenary Award and Lecturer by the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Gabor A. Somorjai Award by the American Chemical Society, the Karl-Ziegler-Award of the German Chemical Society, the Blaise Pascal Medal in Material Science from the European Academy of Sciences, Award for Service from EuCheMS, the Gaede-Langmuir Award of the American Vacuum Society, The Michel Boudart Award for the Advancement of Catalysis, the President’s International Fellowship for Distinguished Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the ACS Award in Surface Chemistry.
