In this Adventures Into History episode, I journey to the historic Benevolence Church Cemetery in Sumter County, Georgia, to visit and clean the graves of my great-great-grandparents, Etta Mae Joiner Green (1896–1974) and Georgia Monroe Green (1891–1956). This graveyard, nestled in a peaceful yet eerie setting, offers a glimpse into the lives and stories of those laid to rest here. While there, I explore the cemetery's historic significance, documenting its beauty and solemnity. Unfortunately, I also confront troubling issues—the intrusion of a trailer moved too close to the cemetery by the church's new owners and a trash pile encroaching on the sacred ground. These challenges highlight the ongoing need to preserve and respect historic sites. Here are some of the earliest recorded burials in the cemetery: Francis Hall: June 5, 1793 – November 24, 1880 Sarah Hall, wife of Francis Hall: Died August 2, 1871, aged 74 years Rebecca Wade Ansley: 1808 – 1872 Asa Ansley: 1804 – 1884 E.O. Ansley: January 23, 1827 – May 10, 1865 Mary J., wife of E.O. Ansley: January 9, 1825 – September 25, 1889 George A., son of Morgan & Rebecca Hall: October 28, 1832 – November 3, 1859 James, son of Francis & Sarah Hall: October 29, 1832 – [no date] Joel T. Hall: January 9, 1834 – March 9, 1917 Clara A., wife of J.T. Hall: April 25, 1839 – May 21, 1904 Also, check out my other adventures at The Old Byrd Farm channel! / @theoldbyrdfarm
