Jumanji 2, the videogame movie starring Jumanji The Rock Dwayne Johnson, Jumanji Jack Black, Jumanji Kevin Hart, and Jumanji Karen Gillan is pretty far removed from the first Jumanji movie, the Jumanji Robin Williams version. For this new Jumanji sequel, they transformed the old Jumanji board game into a Jumanji video game. And despite not being an existing video game adaptation, Jumanji actually captures the way video games make us feel than most video game adaptations out there. There have been so many bad video game movies, but the problem with game movies is that any game movie that adapts an existing videogame has the deck stacked against it. That’s why the best video game movies are movies about video games, and not the other way around. The problem with video game films is the fact that they can’t capture the experience of playing a game. They’re a passive experience, with a movie, you just sit there and watch. Games like Super Mario Bros., Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed, Tomb Raider, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Warcraft, Doom, Double Dragon, and more just doesn’t work when turned into a liner game movie. When it comes to game adaptations, like the Assassin’s Creed movie starring Michael Fassbender Assassin’s Creed, the Jake Gyllenhaal Prince of Persia Movie, the upcoming Alicia Vikander Tomb Raider movie with Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, the Super Mario Bros. movie starring Bob Hoskins Mario Mario, John Leguizamo Luigi, Dennis Hopper Koopa, the Jean Claude Van Damme Street Fighter movie, the Rock Doom movie, and other game movies, the problem is trying to adapt an existing game’s story, but the best video game stories still can’t measure up to stories made directly for the screen. That’s why it’s best to make a movie that’s about the experience of playing games instead. Movies like Tron movie, The Last Starfighter, The Wizard, Wreck-It Ralph, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and now the new Jumanji movie. These movies about video games are about how video games make us feel, not just the stories inside them. We can never capture the experience of play, and the story of a game isn’t compelling without the fun parts in between, but videogame movies about videogames are the best kind of videogame movie there is.
