Andrew Rivera is starting his new series on video game adaptations with a look at the disastrous debut movie ‘Super Mario Bros.’ » Subscribe to NowThis Nerd: http://go.nowth.is/Nerd_Subscribe Mario mania is still sweeping the nation in 2018, but that’s nothing compared to the height of the plumber’s power in 1993. That’s when the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie was released into theaters to a disastrous result. The 1993 Super Mario Bros movie was the first big budget live action video game adaptation, outside of the odd video game cartoon and the 1986 Super Mario Bros anime. The Super Mario movie was a brutal shoot from start to finish, from the original screenplay to the tumultuous shoot. They hired legendary actors like Bob Hoskins Mario, Dennis Hopper Koopa, and John Leguizamo Luigi, all of whom deeply regretted ever signing on for the Super Mario Brothers movie. The Mario movie was in trouble from the start, since it’s hard to translate a video game to the screen without losing what makes video games so fun in the first place. Gaming and videogames are interactive experiences, and it’s really hard to bring those qualities to the screen intact. You have fun doing the goomba and koopa stomping, rescuing peach and saving the Mushroom Kingdom yourself, you don’t just watch it happen. When the Super Mario Bros. movie debuted, a good Super Mario Bros review was hard to find. Ever film review and movie review seemed to eviscerate the Super Mario Bros movie, and for good reason. It wasn’t funny, with lame humor, the action wasn’t impressive, and the fan-service and references to the game sucked. It seems like the directors were embarrassed to be bringing such a simple, ‘kiddie’ game to the movies, and it shows. Nintendo has a new Mario movie in the works, a new animated Mario movie from the makers of ‘Minions.’ Only time will tell if it be better than the original Super Mario Brothers movie, but it’s gonna be pretty hard to be much worse.
