Pictorial ensemble from hiking the Buckskin Gulch and West Clark Bench areas of Southern Utah on October 22, 2021. See INTRODUCTION Below. The route begins at the Buckskin Gulch Trailhead on House Rock Valley Road. From there it heads south along Buckskin Gulch before veering east toward Teepee Dome and the Edmaier's Brain Formation before climbing up onto the West Clark Bench. From that height there are good views of the Coyote Buttes North region near The Wave. Key features of the area are noted including the West Clark Bench Arch, Fin Rocks and the Rock Lace Hoodoo. Care must be taken because the western and southern faces of the West Clark Bench are sheer cliffs and very dangerous. Aside from the entry at Buckskin Gulch, there is no trail and the route has lots of exposure to falling. You need to be in good physical shape, have backcountry hiking experience and know your limits before hiking in this area. Please be careful not to damage delicate features. 0:22 Location of Buckskin Gulch 0:30 The Hiking Route 1:16 Volcanic Rock Pedestals 2:16 Seasonal Desert Pool 2:35 Edmaier's Brain Formation 3:05 Ramp to Upper West Clark Bench 3:58 Weird Sculpture 4:29 West Clark Bench Arch 4:52 Wave Route Views 5:38 Coyote Buttes North Backcountry Views 7:01 Fin Rock Formations 7:40 Rattlesnake! 7:51 Lace Rock Hoodoo ▶ Route Map and Descriptions: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?... ▶ Audio Credit: Licensed by Soundstripe Productions https://app.soundstripe.com/songs/6716: These Times by Adrian Walther You need an active Soundstripe subscription or YouTube will show a copyright claim https://www.soundstripe.com/blogs/how... ▶ Camera: Canon GX7, some photos are HDR INTRODUCTION TO EDMAIER'S SECRET Edmaier's Secret is actually not so secret anymore. You can find it easily on the internet. The unique sandstone formations of West Clark Bench were shown in photographs in "Earthsong", a book first published in November 2004 by author and geologist Bernhard Edmaier. One of the unique formations there was known as "Brown Pocket". This was due to the natural brown color of the rocks and the pockets of rainfall that it collected. But after publication of the book it became more popularly known as "Edmaiers Brain" due to the peculiar shape of the formations. The West Clark Bench area along Buckskin Gulch has a collection of interesting geologic sandstone formations. Foremost are the rounded cauliflower or brain formations which can be found throughout the area. Also abundant are rope-like formations formed similar to the brain formations, but eroded by water channels flowing downhill. Also very abundant are fields of thin sandstone fins that rise from the underlying sandstone. These are FRAGILE. In many places it's difficult to walk through the area and avoid stepping on them and crushing them. I'm concerned that with the increased awareness of the area, these fragile fins will be trampled over time. Until as recently as 2019 there used to be a small photogenic rock arch known as "Tiny Arch". But apparently someone sat or stepped on it for a photo opportunity and it's now crushed. Be Careful Folks! There are several ways to navigate the geologic formations of West Clark Bench. There are many "user trails" that shortcut across the meanderings of Buckskin Gulch. Starting at the Buckskin Gulch trailhead on House Rock Valley Road, after about 1.4 miles heading southwest and after passing through the 2nd narrowing of Buckskin Gulch you'll see a barbed wire fenceline on the east side of the gulch. Find an opening somewhere along the fence line. As you approach Teepee Dome from the north, you'll encounter your first brain formation. At this location there are what appear to be black volcanic rocks scattered throughout the area. There is one formation where a large dark volcanic-looking stone is perched on a sandstone pedestal like a monument. You can find it in photographs from previous adventurers. The West Clark Bench "Ramp" is a good way to climb upward to West Clark Bench. It climbs upward at a very steep angle and there are dangerous drop-offs on either side. When returning, I'd advise not going down this way, but instead hugging the upper route and go back down via the Bedlam Of Fins area. Description: https://www.thewave.info/EdmaiersSecr...
