Historical Background: The Massacre of Glencoe (1692) The Massacre of Glencoe took place on February 13, 1692, in the Scottish Highlands. Following the Glorious Revolution, King William III demanded an oath of allegiance from Highland clan chiefs. When Alastair MacIain, chief of Clan MacDonald of Glencoe, was delayed in swearing the oath, government troops were sent into the valley. For nearly two weeks, the soldiers were hosted under the sacred Highland tradition of hospitality. Then, under secret orders, they turned on their hosts. In the early hours before dawn, 38 members of the MacDonald clan were killed, and many others died while fleeing into the freezing winter mountains. The massacre shocked Scotland and became a lasting symbol of betrayal and the violation of Highland honor. To this day, Glencoe stands as a place of haunting beauty and solemn remembrance.
