Today, students from Era University’s BSc Nursing program visited Aastha, where Dr. Abhishek Shukla introduced them to the concept of ageism and how it differs from aging. He explained that while aging is a natural and inevitable process, ageism is a societal bias that discriminates against the elderly. He then discussed homeostenosis, the gradual reduction in physiological reserves that makes older individuals more vulnerable to stress and illness. To illustrate the diversity in aging, he gave the examples of former Indian Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and APJ Abdul Kalam, while both aged, their health and physical fitness levels were markedly different. He emphasized that aging is a journey we all undertake and that respect, patience, and understanding are essential in caring for the elderly, urging the students to walk alongside them at their pace. Following this, Dr. Abhishek explained the multidisciplinary team that forms the backbone of a geriatric hospital. He highlighted that a geriatric physician leads the team, overseeing medical care tailored to elderly patients. Social workers play a crucial role in addressing the emotional, financial, and social needs of older individuals. Nurses and paramedics provide round-the-clock care, ensuring patient safety, medication adherence, and wound management. A pharmacist ensures proper medication management, preventing harmful drug interactions that are common in older adults. A physiotherapist helps maintain mobility and prevent falls, which are a major health risk in old age. A nutritionist or dietitian ensures that elderly patients receive appropriate nutrition to support their health and prevent malnutrition. He stressed that each professional has a unique yet interconnected role in providing holistic geriatric care. The session helped the nursing students understand that elderly care is not just about treating illnesses but about improving the overall quality of life by addressing medical, emotional, and social aspects with empathy and respect. #AasthaCares #GeriatricCare #RespectElders #AgingWithDignity #AgeismAwareness #ElderlyCare #HealthcareTeam #CompassionateCare #NursingEducation #Physiother
