And the Tour of Homes was it—it ticked all the boxes,” says Suzanne Escovitz. “It's something new for our neighborhood, but we have built on the success every year,” says Escovitz. “And this year, I think people have really seen the plantings and our restoration work start to take hold, and people are really excited about it. It's become a tradition, which is exactly what we wanted. “Everybody likes to look,” says Escovitz. “And I think that's the appeal of home tours is we drive by these beautiful houses all the time, but wouldn't it be nice if you could get a sneak peek inside? And we deliberately try to have houses as different as the neighborhood itself. And we wouldn't have those houses but for the generosity of the homeowners who are willing to let strangers come through their home. Most of the time attendees are so appreciative and so excited. Homeowners love to see people appreciate what they've done, and it's just a great experience. “It's totally self-directed,” says Escovitz. “People can start/stop whenever they want, and it's just a great day. We see a lot of people having fun, which is what we want. “People have been coming to Asheville for over 100 years to find something,” says Escovitz. “They're just looking for something new and fresh and different—whether it's to reinvent themselves, they're looking for a healing cure—but people have come to this neighborhood for the same reasons. And it was true 100 years ago, it's still true today. “Every house that we have this year and in past years, too, tells a story,” says Escovitz. “Tells a story about the history of the neighborhood, it tells a history of the home owners and this is a neighborhood that we like to feel has a past, present, and a future, too. “Historic neighborhoods are fragile and that's not unique to Asheville,” says Escovitz. “This is something that you'll see throughout the country. And that's why this event is so important.
