I hiked a 15 mile day hike of The Old Man of Hoy, Orkney Islands, Scotland. Getting to Hoy is a bit tricky as there are two ferries but due to the pandemic the car ferry sold out quickly so we had to walk the whole route. This was actually a blessing in disguise because this route was much more scenic than driving the car up and missing half of the trek (never mind the cost of the car ferry ticket compared to the passenger ferry). The hike up to Cuilags at the start of the loop goes off the path but is fairly straightforward. Once you reach the cairn at the top of the highest point on Hoy it is then a bit of a search to find the cliff path along to the Old Man. This was the windiest hike I have ever done and we only managed to get the drone up for a few minutes during a bit of calm in the weather. The views walking down from Cuilags to the Old Man were fantastic and the trail was totally deserted. The hike back to the ferry pier goes through a U-shaped valley which is covered in heather and wild flowers - it looks almost prehistoric and was quite calm.
