পবিত্র বৃক্ষ অশোক | The sacred tree Ashoka | ঔষধি গুনে ভরা বৃহৎ বৃক্ষ Ashoka is a medium-sized, multi-branched evergreen shade tree. This tree is known by various names in different states of India. However, Ashoka is the most popular among them. Ashoka tree is planted to beautify gardens and homes. Also, this tree is planted on roadsides. Ashoka can be seen in India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh, and other regions. This tree grows naturally in these regions. The scientific name of Ashoka is Saraca Indica. And Ashoka is the common English name. Two different kinds of Ashoka, Pride of Burma and Yellow Ashoka, can be found in India and Bangladesh. Ashoka blooms with reddish-orange flowers during Spring. The bud is round, about 7.5 cm wide. Small flowers are held in clusters on the stem or branch. The average length of the flower is 2.5 cm. Ashoka flower is very fragrant. The fruit is flattened like a large bean. Seedlings grow easily from seeds. Leaves are dark green in color and long, wide, and lanceolate in shape. Ashoka tree usually matures in 4-5 years but takes 8-10 years to reach full maturity. Ashoka has many medicinal properties. Bark juice of this plant is effective in various gynecological diseases, hemorrhage, and dysentery. This plant is very effective in relieving the pain of many diseases. Ashoka tree is planted in the temple premises as it is considered sacred by Hindu and Buddhist communities. The use of Ashoka wood is less as it is softer than other woods. This wood can be used as fuel and paper pulp. Its bean-like fruits are excellent food for wildlife. Commercial cultivation of Ashoka is not seen in our country. A full-grown tree can yield about BDT 2000 worth of bark, seeds, and flowers annually. Ashoka is currently on the verge of extinction.
