April 22–23.2023 the Paarlasti room in Suomenlinna was filled with diving enthusiasts and science professionals interested in citizen science for a seminar organised by the Finnish Divers' Federation and the Finnish Maritime Archaeological Society. The Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as a case study of Diving for Science The case study of Suomenlinna island fortress on the northern shores of the Gulf of Finland, serves as an excellent example of diving for science. The fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage site with a fascinating underwater cultural heritage from different time periods, mostly from the 18th century. The underwater part of the fortress has piqued the interest of divers for at least 50 years. However, the first known diving activities date back as early as the 1860s, from a commercial view that saw scuttled ships as a source of wood. The historical value was highlighted towards the end of 1980s, when the first inventory of the underwater cultural heritage was organised by the society called Teredo Navalis, as an initiative from the Maritime Museum of Finland and the Governing Body of Suomenlinna. Today, the national register for archaeological sites contains information from surveys connected to water construction projects, archaeological excavations, student projects etc. Minna had the privilege of bundling this information into a temporary exhibition at the Suomenlinna museum, using information for a PhD thesis, and actively continuing with the ongoing research project called “End of Glory Days, Biography of the Swedish wrecks as Blue Heritage of Suomenlinna,” a subproject to “The Lost Navy” research program. The project runs from 2021-2026 and is a collaboration between the Governing Body of Suomenlinna, Helsinki University, the Ehrensvärd Society, the Viapori Dockyard Society, the Maritime Archaeological Society (MAS), and with the Finnish Heritage Agency as the responsible leader. Our project concentrates on the wooden wrecks of the navy from Finland´s Swedish period (before 1809). We organised archaeological excavations in 2022 for a wooden skeleton wreck and a cannon site, together with MAS. The challenges for the underwater study include the low public awareness because these wooden wrecks are invisible to everyday life. The biggest impact Diving for Science could have, is to raise the public awareness of this rich heritage, in order to improve people´s relationships with the water environment. This goal fits perfectly for the Ocean Decade. Minna encourages every diver to give presentations and share stories with a personal touch: “Within these two days, we should discuss the question “where” we are heading with the diving for science activities. This is the way we can Get “There”- Together!”
