April 22–23.2023 the Paarlasti room in Suomenlinna was filled with diving enthusiasts and science professionals interested in citizen science for a seminar organised by the Finnish Divers' Federation and the Finnish Maritime Archaeological Society. The Gulf of Finland has been one of the most important trade routes in the world. In both world wars it was the most heavily mined sea area in the world as well. This has resulted in a multitude of wrecks which the properties of the Baltic Sea have preserved in a unique fashion. However, many of the wrecks since the first world war contain substances, mainly oils, which are harmful for the fragile environment of the northern Baltic Sea. Badewanne dive team has worked for decades in co-operation with Finnish and Estonian authorities on both historical and environmental aspects of these legacy wrecks. Additionally, SYKE has been since beginning of 2023 responsible for surveying these wrecks and conducting salvage if deemed necessary. In this work also citizen science has many opportunities. Technical divers dive and document these wrecks and can thus become survey data producers. Only by working together can we solve the problem of our legacy wrecks – the ticking time bombs on the seafloor.
